Adobe AI Tool Firefly Is Generally and Commercially Available


Firefly supports over 100 languages for text prompt inputs. Besides, the Firefly website has been localized for more than 20 languages, starting with Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

On Wednesday, September 13, Adobe Inc (NASDAQ: ADBE) released its AI tool called Firefly. Previously, Firefly had been available as beta only. Now, this AI model is commercially available across Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Express, and Adobe Experience Cloud.

As Adobe has explained, Firefly is a standalone web application that offers new ways to ideate, create, and communicate while significantly improving creative workflows using generative AI. In addition to the Firefly web app, Adobe also has the broader Firefly family of creative generative AI models, along with features powered by Firefly in Adobe’s flagship apps and Adobe Stock.

Basically, Firefly offers AI-powered image creation and editing for enterprise users. Adobe trained Firefly on its stock images, public domain content, and other openly licensed or non-copyright material. With Firefly integrated into Adobe Express and the Creative Cloud app, users can create beautiful images, transform text, play with color, and more.

To see how often users interact with Firefly, Adobe will employ so-called “generative credits”. Every time you click “generate” to create a Firefly image, you will consume one credit. Firefly offers different subscription plans: a free-of-charge plan that provides you with 25 generative credits monthly, or a premium plan that ensures 100 monthly generative credits, Adobe Fonts, and no watermarks on images generated by Firefly.

Notably, all those subscribed to existing paid Adobe plans will get access to quite a few of these generative credits immediately. For example, Adobe Stock paid subscribers will get 500 generative credits. Those subscribed to Adobe Express Premium will get 250 generative credits. Creative Cloud All Apps subscribers are entitled to as many as 1,000 generative credits.

Once users run out of credits, they will not lose access to Firefly. Instead, the app will run significantly slower. Notably, Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express Premium subscribers will be limited to the use of only two credits per day until their count resets at the end of the month. Until November 1, Adobe users subscribed to Creative Cloud, Adobe Firefly, Adobe Express and Adobe Stock will not be subject to the credit limits.

Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP for Generative AI and Sensei, said:

“All of these models are very large. They run in the cloud and are expensive to run. And we are optimizing them for the quality of output, not for inference speed. Because of that, we need to protect the user base to make sure they have access to the service and to ensure fair use of the service.”

The company has launched a range of AI tools that comply with its AI ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency. Apart from Adobe Firefly, these AI tools include Sensei GenAI services that use multiple large language models (LLMs) including Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and FLAN-T5 for brands to generate and modify text-based experiences.
